MIDDAY MEAL PROGRAM

Members from the three ISKCON centres in Mumbai, ISKCON Juhu, ISKCON Mira Road and ISKCON Chawpatty, came together and took the opportunity of implementing this project of Govt. of Maharashtra.

Shri Ambrish Patel, Hon. Minister for School Education, Sports and Youth Affairs formally launched the programme on Sunday, the 20th June 2004. At this function Dr. Jairaj Pathak, Chief Secretary, School Education, Shri Ram Maheshwary of Times of India, Ms. Basanti Roy, Education Inspector South Mumbai and the Sheriff of Mumbai Dr. Jagannathrao Hegde, were also present.

Initially, strategies were rolled out for setting up kitchens in each of the five pilot schools in the five wards of south zone. However, following a fire mishap in one of the midday meal kitchen in a school in Kombakarnam, Tamilnadu, the Government passed a notification disallowing any cooking in schools. Changing our initial plans and choosing a safer system, we opted for setting up a central kitchen. We started looking for a suitable place and in the mean time started the activity on a moderate scale from our kitchen at Chowpatty.

During this period, we received the permission to carry out the programme in the Municipal schools of Mira Bhayandar Municipality . A kitchen was set up on the fifth floor of Bhaktivedanta Hospital at Shrishti Complex, Mira Road East . It was inaugurated by Mr. Alfred Ford (Ambrisha Das) on 7th November 2004. This kitchen has a capacity of cooking for 20,000 students per day

Our search for the premises in South Mumbai culminated at a suitable place in Jaywant Industrial Estate at Tardeo. Started on 14th Jan 2005 , this state-of-the-art kitchen presently has the capacity of serving up to 24000 students per day.

To expand this project to benefit underprivileged children in other parts of the country, ISKCON has formed a non-profit, non-religious, non-sectarian charitable trust registered under The Bombay Public Trusts Act, 1950. Named ISKCON FOOD RELIEF FOUNDATION, the trust has been organising Midday Meal Program in other cities besides Mumbai, such as Delhi, Jaipur, Tirupati and will soon start this project in Ujjain, Palghar, Wada and Nigdi.
